We learned about King Solomon, one of the kings of Israel, known to be wise, wealthy, and for building the temple of the Lord. However we soon learned from 1 Kings 11:1-6, that Solomon's downfall was from worshiping other gods, brought by his many wives from foreign lands--and He started to turned from the path of God. |
1 Kings 11 :26-33
We learned of a man called Jeroboam, he was Solomon's official, a capable man. God sent Abijah, the prophet of Shiloh, to tell Jeroboam of God's message.
31 Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. 32 But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe."
God would split Israel into two: 10 under the reign of Jeroboam called the Northern Kingdom, and the rest under Rehoboam (Solomon's son, ruled after his father's death), called the Southern Kingdom.
After Jeroboam ruled, he also forgot about God, he made two golden calves for the people to worship, so that they not need to go to temple of the lord in Jerusalam (Southern Kingdom) for he fears that they would revert back to supporting Rehoboam. And so the nations started falling into sin, and God was not pleased.
And over the 200 years, within the Northern Kingdom ruled 19 kings, all of which was not a good follower of God. The last of which was Hoshea. Within that time God had sent many signs, prophets to get Israel back on track but they never listened.
We read from 2 Kings 17: 13-23
14 But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God. 15 They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, “Do not do as they do.”
So God punished them by surrendering them into the hands of their enemy, Assyria, and the Northern Kingdom was defeated, their city burned down, and their people exiled.
As for the Southern Kingdom (you will learn more next week), there were 20 rulers, among which only 5 would follow the Lord. They too fell into sin, and God punished them by giving them into the hands of the Babylonians. And thus the tribes of Israel were all exiled.
